Survey results: Takaro Investing in Play
    August 2017

    Background

One of council’s key functions is to provide our growing population with opportunities to play. We want to ensure our play spaces deliver great value to our communities so we asked the People’s Panel what they want play spaces to be like in the future.

How we will use the results

The People’s Panel results, along with other consultation feedback, will guide the draft ‘Tākaro – Investing in Play’ investment plan. When we have finished the draft it will be shared publicly for a second round of consultation, expected to happen in 2018.

    Methodology

    • 19,689 panellists received an invitation
    • 2,675 surveys were completed
    • Survey was open for 10 days (7-17 August 2017)

This survey was run on Auckland Council's People's Panel, a quick and easy way for Aucklanders to help shape Auckland by taking part in short surveys.

  • Question 1F Why do you say that?

The beaches are nice and the bush walks we do are all well maintained and really enjoyable

We have a range of parks near us that provide a good variety of play equipment and outdoor experiences, opportunities for picnics, open spaces to run around as well as safe spaces for children practising their bike skills

The swings etc are kept in good condition, toilets are clean and there are rubbish bins.

When I take my nieces and nephews to play at the park, I would feel more confident if it was fenced in.  if I have more than one with me I freak out because they get out of sight and they could have walked off

Playgrounds we have been to, have been enjoyable and have only good memories

The park we go to has no shade, summertime it's too hot for our kids to play there..not enough activities for the children to play on so it's not used a lot..

Lack of variety and too much mown grass and not enough trees to climb-  walkways to explore etc

I would like to see a few more creative playgrounds and safe cycleways for families

Most toilet facilities are great now (compared to 30 years ago!). Awesome information boards at beaches, great BBQ facilities, seats etc

We always come home feeling happier than when we went!

There are few play areas that suit older children and youth. There are often too many kids playing for the amount of equipment. There are very limited number of skate parks & pump tracks which are great activities for youth. There are no nature play grounds, and too much money has been spent on fancy play grounds such as Parrs park which has very little to play on.

Limited facilities for differing age groups of kids (i.e. either a young childs play park or a skate park, not very often both in the same location. Very few facilities in new growth areas like Millwater / Silverdale.

The new Takapuna Play aera o the beach is the best think, also I walk the beach

Toddler friendly options very important for us, particularly those that we can use in winter too. So those soft play mat surfaces are great. Also play equipment that can challenge brave little ones, different levels of difficulty...
Toilets would be great if they provided a nappy change space. Seats in sheltered warm spots good for mums too.

The beaches are ok, but please plant more trees. The kids love the natural environment. The facilities are ok. Some are excellent (Wenderholm), whilst others are just average.

Due to space restrictions not all comments are displayed in this report. The above is a selection of responses to this question.
