• Help shape Nelson Street off-ramp cycleway design

The disused Nelson Street motorway off-ramp will be transformed into a new cycleway and walkway by the end of this year, creating a new landmark for Auckland.

The route will from part of the Nelson Street Cycle Route, which is being delivered by the NZ Transport Agency and Auckland Transport. It will connect with and expand Auckland’s rapidly-improving cycle network, and aligns with the shared long-term vision of the NZ Transport Agency, Auckland Transport and Auckland Council to build world-class cycling infrastructure that promotes cycling as a safe and convenient mode of transport.

The route will link from Upper Queen Street through Canada Street and a new bridge, which will connect to the disused Nelson Street off-ramp. The cycle route will continue down Nelson Street to connect to Auckland’s downtown. The proposed cycle route will also connect to the north-western and Grafton Gully cycleways, providing easier and safer access to and from the city centre.

Transforming the off-ramp was highlighted in the council’s City Centre Masterplan (view here). The setting and spectacular views give it the potential to attract world-wide attention, and to help it meet that potential, we are asking Aucklanders to have their say on designs for the surface to make it really stand out.

Your views will help shape the design, along with input from iwi and Cycle Action Auckland, which has championed the project. A design will be finalised later this year and then incorporated into the off-ramp when it is opened.
