On Wednesday 28th June, I will be talking to a community heritage groups networking event at Highwic House hosted by Heritage New Zealand. Under discussion is “Where to from here for heritage - an update on the Unitary Plan”. Following my presentation, there will be a discusion on how community groups might work together in the interests of our heritage. The Auckland Heritage Fesitval 2017 is fast approaching. The festival runs from the 30th September until the 15th October - with the theme "From waterways to motorways - the heritage of transport and travel in Tāmaki Makaurau". Event submissions closed mid-May with 170 applications received to date - so it is shaping up to be another entertaining and informative festival.

Congratulations to the successful applicants to the 2017 Regional Historic Heritage Grants Programme. We received an impressive 42 applications of which seven were funded, including St. Patrick’s Presbytery roofing project, stability of Alison McKenzie House in Helensville, restoration of graves at Te Muri Cemetery and Waikumete Cemetery, maintenance and repair works for Stonemason’s House in Parnell and Onehunga Community House, and the Pitt Street Building’s guttering project.

Looking for a new challenge?  Come work with us in our Senior Built Heritage role.

Noho ora mai.

Work within the unit has recently rediscovered the location of the 1942 United States Air Force flying fortress bomber crash involving 11 fatalities. The site has no statutory protection and contains buried wreckage of the aircraft and potential human remains. Robert Brassey has been working with the owner and developer, the United States Consul and defense department, a group of archaeological volunteers, and the Ministry for Culture and Heritage to ensure that the site of this tragedy is managed with respect. Watch the One News coverage of this rediscovery.
