Happy December! The kick off of  to summer has finally arrived.  This time of year sets our city centre buzzing with activity for everyone to enjoy from the awesome Santa parade to the free Summer in the City events at Aotea Square.  Our city is truly a busy and a fun place to be and becoming more accessible and exciting for everyone. 

We will continue to keep our ear to the ground and eyes open to keep you informed about the exciting changes to our waterfront and city centre.  And, best wishes to all during the holiday season.

Christmas walking trails

Make the most of early summer evenings and enjoy our city’s most loved Christmas attractions on foot! These Christmas trails take in old favourites as well as new favourites with some sweet surprises in between.  Discover how easy and enjoyable it is to walk around the city centre. What’s next for Auckland’s city centre

Auckland Council recently released a video detailing how far it’s come with the urban design of the city centre over the last 10 to 15 years, as well as its vision for the years to come.

Federal Street beautification

Federal Street is up next for an upgrade which is designed to create a shared space for more people to enjoy while providing access to upper and lower parts of the central city and public transport routes on Mayoral Drive and Wellesley Street.

CRL trench reaches new depths

The Albert St trench has reached its full 18-metre depth near Wyndham St. Now they are removing the 100-year-old stormwater pipe at the base of the trench before it can start building the tunnel box at the southern end of the trench. The current depth of the remainder of the trench varies between 3.5 to six metres but will continue to be excavated from south to north. Watch the latest video

Queens Wharf gets a mooring dolphin

Auckland will have a new mooring dolphin to ensure the big cruise ships can moor in the Waitematā Harbour for the 2019/20 cruise season. It will allow for more large 350 metre cruise ships providing a boost to the $220 million and 4,000 local jobs that the cruise industry already adds to the region’s economy. Read more

Ports’ D-crane flies the coop

Ports of Auckland has officially closed its second container terminal and demolished its oldest container crane. Next year, three new cranes able to carry up to four containers at once will be installed on a new berth that was completed this year. It will be the premium berth able to handle the biggest container ships. These projects and more are all part of the Port’s draft 30-year master plan. You can give feedback here.

Erosion repair on seawall underway

Work is underway on the Quay Street Seawall below the Ferry Terminal area. The work began in early October and is expected to be finished in 8 to 10 weeks.  

Lasers mark the start on The Pacifica

A series of multi-coloured laser lights illuminating the Auckland night sky recently has marked the start of on-site construction work on The Pacifica, a new 56-storey skyscraper being built on Commerce Street in Auckland’s city centre. Construction is expected to be completed in 2020 – just in time for the next America’s Cup. Read more  

CRL over the moon about its energy saving

In its latest Sustainability Annual Review, Auckland’s City Rail Link (CRL) reveals that in one construction methodology initiative alone, it saved enough diesel to drive to the moon three times. Chief executive Chris Meale says the project is on track to meet its vision of designing, constructing and operating the CRL to the highest sustainability standards as detailed in the review. New free walking tour app

AKL City Tours is a brand new, free mobile application which hosts a variety of downloadable walking tours that stretch across Auckland’s central city. Griffiths Gardens’ summer action

There is a lot of fun activity at Griffiths Gardens over the summer from the Natural Bee Keeping School to organic gardening classes.

Community Fridge Turns 1

The Community Fridge - located at Griffiths Gardens on Wellesley Street - has been providing free food for people for a year. It is estimated that since the fridge was installed, more than four tonnes of food has been donated which is the equivalent to 11,000 meals.

Two options for AC36

We are one step closer to securing the 36th America’s Cup in 2021 and its potential location.  There are two options on the table for Auckland Council’s Governing Body to make a decision on 14 December about the team base location.  The options are Wynyard Basin cluster or Wynyard Point dispersed.

Wynyard Quarter welcomes its first residents

The first residents to call Wynyard Quarter home will move in this month (December), marking a major milestone in the redevelopment of the waterfront location.   The city’s urban regeneration agency Panuku Development Auckland has partnered with Willis Bond & Co. to deliver 500 homes in Wynyard Quarter, the first of which – Wynyard Central Pavilions – is now complete. Read more

Silo Park chosen as Arts Festival destination

Silo Park has been chosen to host the Festival Playground as part of Auckland Arts Festival, which kicks off in March next year. The decision heralds a fresh chapter in the 15-year history of the event, which traditionally orbits Aotea Square among other central city locations.
